As the population grows, so do the demands we put on the environment. Between 1 January and 29 July 2019, the global population used up all of the resources the planet would produce for the whole year. We’re depleting forests faster than we can regrow them, and at current rates, world fishing populations are set to completely collapse by 2048.
With this level of consumption comes waste, pollution and the widespread destruction of habitats. Greenhouse gas emissions are predicted to increase by more than 50% by 2050. By then, air pollution will be the top environmental cause of premature death. Unless we improve our everyday habits, many of these changes will come in our lifetime.
Because of environmental damage, 40% of the world’s population will live in water-stressed regions by 2050, meaning there will not be enough available drinking water.
Our planet is becoming less and less biodiverse. Species are dying off at a rate that is 1,000 to 10,000 times faster than the natural extinction rate.
Coral reefs are home to approximately a quarter of all marine life worldwide. Sadly, a quarter of reefs are already damaged beyond repair.
On average, it can take 450 years for one plastic bottle to decompose.
Our everyday choices have a direct impact on the future of the planet. Whether we recycle, conserve water or take the bus to school, every action has an effect on the environment. Even how we shop can have an impact. Do I buy recycled products? Will I end up throwing away this product? Eco-friendly choices have many benefits.
In some cases, our lack of knowledge is holding us back. Is this item recyclable? What is the impact of taking a shower, instead of a bath? The more people who are aware of their environmental footprint, the more we can change our world for the better!
